What Holds Beneath
Field Study #5
In Washington, I found myself noticing the tree roots.
Some stretched so far beyond the base of the tree
that they seemed longer than the tree itself was tall.
It made me pause.
Not everything strong rises high.
Some strength travels outward.
Some support stays low to the ground.
Some lives in what anchors, steadies, and quietly holds.
In a city known for its monuments,
the trees offered a different kind of wisdom.
Not performance.
Not height.
Not spectacle.
Only reach.
Only endurance.
Only the patient work of staying connected.
What we noticed
Tree roots extending far beyond what the eye expects
Older trees holding space quietly among the city structures
Strength expressed through connection, not height.
