The Buffleheads Are Back
Field Study No. 6
But some disappearances are not departures—
just a shift in where we are looking.
Try This
Watch something moving across water.
Notice not only where it goes,
but where it briefly disappears.
Best Experienced
early morning
near still water
light wind across the surface
quiet shoreline moments
Location

What We Noticed
Black and white ducks have returned to the lake.
Small in size,
but easy to notice once seen.
They move differently than the others.
Diving beneath the surface,
disappearing completely,
then rising again several feet away.
At times, in the movement of the water,
they seemed to disappear entirely—
not diving, just slipping out of sight between the waves.
Charlie stood at the edge, watching closely.
