A Ball Waiting by the Pond

Saffin Pond, Jefferson New Jersey

Field Study No. 3

Location

Saffin Pond — Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

Season

Late Winter

Observed By

Suellen - Charlie

 What We Noticed

The snow was still fresh on the trail,
and each step carried that familiar winter crunch.

Charlie stepped onto the path with the alert excitement of a first real outing,
nose to the wind and attention everywhere.

Not far into the walk,
a bright pink tennis ball appeared near the pond.

It looked almost impossibly vivid against the muted colors of winter.

Nearby, the trail held its usual quiet.

Turtle Pond sat off to the right,
still and watchful.

There were already small signs that the season was beginning to loosen.

A little softness in the air.
A little green is beginning to return.

Field Notes

Winter trails often reveal unexpected objects more clearly than other seasons.

Snow and bare ground strip the landscape down,
making color and movement easier to notice.

That contrast can make even ordinary things feel strangely significant.

Reflection

Not everything bright belongs to someone.

Some things are simply waiting to be noticed.

Try This

On your next walk,
notice what stands out against the season.

Look for the one thing that does not blend in.

Best Experienced

• fresh snow
• first walks in a new place
• quiet pond trails
• late winter mornings
