Steeped: Lavender Earl Grey Over Ice

Not every Steeped moment arrives in a teacup.

Not every Steeped moment arrives in a teacup.

The first glass of summer

A familiar tea, softened by flowers and cooled for warmer days.

Lavender Earl Grey begins with the classic brightness of bergamot 🌿 that citrusy, almost sparkling note that makes Earl Grey feel awake without being sharp. The lavender changes the pace. It settles the cup. It adds a floral quietness that feels less like rushing into the day and more like arriving slowly.

Over ice, the tea becomes lighter and more spacious.

This is not a heavy summer drink. It is not sweet tea. It is tea with room around it, fragrant, cooling, and calm enough for a morning reset, an afternoon pause, or the kind of evening when the air is still warm but your body is ready to soften.

What’s in the cup

Lavender Earl Grey is usually a black tea blended with bergamot oil and dried lavender flowers.

The black tea gives it structure.

The bergamot gives it brightness.

The lavender gives it a softer edge.

Together, they create a cup that feels both alert and gentle, one of the reasons this tea works so beautifully over ice.

Why it works over ice

Some teas lose themselves when cooled.

Lavender Earl Grey does not.

The bergamot becomes brighter.
The lavender becomes more aromatic.
The black tea keeps the cup grounded.

Served cold, it feels less formal than a hot afternoon tea, but still more intentional than grabbing something quickly from the fridge.

It asks for a glass.
A little time.
Maybe a sprig from the garden.
Maybe nothing extra at all.

The Bluff way to steep it

Steep the tea a little stronger than you would for a hot cup.

Use fresh water, bring it just to a boil, and steep for 4–5 minutes depending on the tea. Because it will be poured over ice, the flavor needs enough strength to hold.

Let it cool slightly before serving over ice.

Add honey only if you want the lavender to feel rounder. Add lemon only if you want the bergamot to brighten. Add milk only if you want it to become softer and creamier, almost like a chilled London Fog.

For the Bluff, we like it simple:

Lavender Earl Grey
Ice
A mug ready to move 🌿 by bike, by boat, or wherever the wander leads.

A note on the body

Black tea contains caffeine, though usually less than coffee.

It also contains L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in tea leaves. L-theanine is often associated with a calmer, more focused kind of alertness, which is part of why tea can feel different from coffee.

The lavender adds its own sensory calm 🌿 not as a cure, not as a promise, but as an aromatic signal to slow down.

This is tea as a pause.

Not a prescription.
Not a performance.
Just a small way back to yourself.

Best enjoyed

Floating slowly on Lake Hopatcong
Beside an open window
After watering the garden
In a tall glass with ice
When the day has been moving too quickly
Before stepping back outside

Pair it with

Light shortbread
Lemon biscuits
Fresh berries
Toast with honey
A few quiet pages
A shaded porch
A lake view
A field note waiting to be written

Carry this cup with you

Let the first glass be simple.

Not everything summer asks of us needs to be loud. Some things arrive cooled, floral, and clear 🌿reminding us that refreshment can still be gentle.

Lavender Earl Grey over ice is where this series begins.

A first travel mug.
A softer pace.
A season opening slowly.
